IKERLAN has developed a programme that will help clients of energy companies that operate in the Iberdrola Distribución area make savings on their household energy bills. It is a free add-on for Google Chrome web browser called Home Energy Analizer (IK-HEA), which analyses data on the energy consumption of a home, comparing it with the contracted tariff, and suggests different options for more efficient spending.

This programme, already available in the Chrome Web Store (the digital store where you can download various browser extensions), provides users with advice to help them reduce their electricity bill by adapting their habits or changing their tariff.

In order to use the Home Energy Analizer, users must have a smart meter installed, create a user on the Iberdrola Distribución website and must live in an area where the company has implemented its remote management system. The programme has a user-friendly interface, suitable for non-specialist users.

Tariff and power in contract

This tool informs users of the type of tariff which best suits their consumption pattern: an off-peak tariff where energy prices are lower at night than during the day, or one where the price of electricity is practically fixed, regardless of the time of the day.

The programme also reveals whether the power contracted has been adjusted to the way in which it is consumed and, if the power peaks are below the amount contracted by the user, it will suggest changing the contract maximum level. It must not be forgotten that the higher the power contracted, the higher the tariff.

Applications for phones and tablets

At the moment, this add-on is only available for Chrome on a PC, but IKERLAN is already working on the design of programmes compatible with Mac computers and other browsers. Furthermore, the next step will be to implement applications for phones and tablets.

“In IKERLAN we are working on developing applications to encourage the rational use of energy by combining information technology with energy management techniques” explains the researcher from the Aitor Milo centre. “With IKERLAN Home Energy Analyzer, home users will have accurate knowledge of how they consume energy and this will help them to make decisions that allow them to save on this consumption”, he added.
