- Companies will be able to verify that their products meet the necessary industrial cybersecurity requirements with the guarantee that certifiers will validate them.
- Industrial cybersecurity is one of IKERLAN's priority areas of work and represents 25% of the centre's revenue in transfer projects.
The IKERLAN technology centre has become the first industrial cybersecurity laboratory in Spain to be accredited by ENAC, the National Accreditation Body, in accordance with the UNE17025 standard for carrying out requirements verification tests. product safety functional requirements of the UNE-EN IEC 62443-4-2 series of standards.
This certification accredits IKERLAN's capacity to conduct tests to verify the security of the functional requirements of the components used in industrial automation and control systems (IACS), during the product development phase. This is a major achievement for the preservation of cybersecurity in industrial environments, taking into account the risk and threats associated with industrial infrastructures and the potential consequences of a cybersecurity breach in them. With this accreditation, IKERLAN's cybersecurity laboratory has become a European benchmark and the first accredited entity in Spain to carry out this activity.
The ENAC-accredited laboratory is located in DIGILAB, the most advanced digital technology laboratory in the country, inaugurated at the end of 2022. DIGILAB provides IKERLAN's research team and its customers with technology that is not available outside this facility and it is proving to be a great tool for attracting talent to the technological centre.
In reference to the importance of having this accreditation, Marcelino Caballero, director of the cybersecurity laboratory, explains: “Europe has approved a regulation that will be mandatory for electronic products in 2026, which means that products will have to certify a minimum level of cybersecurity. At IKERLAN, we have been helping various companies for some time now to make more robust designs through this test bench. Now. thanks to this accreditation, our customers not only gain reinforced confidence in the reliability of the reports we issue regarding the cybersecurity of their products, but this confidence also extends to their own customers and to third parties, such as certification bodies.
The industrial cybersecurity area represents 25% of IKERLAN’s sales to companies and has a team of 50 highly specialized people. In the last three years, IKERLAN has doubled the size of this area due to the growing needs of companies.
Cybersecurity Ecosystem in IKERLAN
In this context, the Basque technology centre IKERLAN created the startup ORBIK Cybersecurity in 2023 to offer industrial companies an external seal that guarantees that their products are cyber-secure according to the most demanding international cybersecurity standards. It is the only company in the country aimed at serving European manufacturers of industrial electronic equipment who want to position themselves in the market as companies offering certified cyber-secure products before it becomes mandatory.
The IKERLAN technology centre is a leading player in the field of industrial electronic product cybersecurity, both in our local environment and in Europe. In the Basque Country, the centre works closely with Cyberzaintza (Basque Cybersecurity Agency) and ZIUR (Industrial Cybersecurity Centre of Gipuzkoa) to offer support to industrial companies and institutions. Internationally, in Europe, IKERLAN is a member of ECSO (the European Cyber Security Organization) and collaborates with the independent German certifier TÜV Rheinland. It also works with ISA Secure, the American organization that defines cybersecurity standards in electronics.
