On Friday, IKERLAN celebrated its fourth ceremony to recognise its doctoral students. This year, due to the health situation, it has been carried out telematically. At the opening of the event, IKERLAN's Managing Director, Marcelino Caballero, highlighted the work and efforts of the doctoral students, emphasising the importance of the results of their theses in providing value and knowledge to IKERLAN, to the surrounding companies and to society in general. The event was attended by more than 150 people, including the doctoral students, tutors, researchers and other guests.
During the day, the PhD students presented the details of their theses and, after a vote by the attendees, the best presentations of the day were given awards. Ignacio Trojaola with his thesis entitled Machine Learning Control for the Commissioning of Hydraulic Presses was awarded the first prize, while the PhD student Ángel Longueira, took second place with the presentation of his thesis Cybersecurity Evaluation Methodology for Industrial Embedded Components.
Currently, 33% of the 345 people who make up IKERLAN are PhD qualified. More specifically, in 2019, there were 8 theses finalised and 17 new ones started, while 57 were still in progress. To achieve this, last year the centre invested more than one million euros in the training, professionalisation and specialisation of its student body. Thanks to the work carried out in collaboration with more than a dozen universities, Ikerlan currently has 48 research theses under way, within the framework of the centre's main areas of research: Electronics, Information and Communication Technologies, Energy and Power Electronics, and Advanced Manufacturing.
To date, more than 150 doctoral theses have been undertaken at the centre, demonstrating IKERLAN's strategic commitment to the qualified training of its researchers since its inception. As a result, IKERLAN is considered to be an ideal centre for obtaining a doctoral thesis and as a driving force behind research geared to the real needs of industry and to the development of human skills and knowledge.
This was the fourth time that this event was held, an event that was created to share experiences and knowledge, an event in which the centre recognises and values the personal efforts of researchers to find solutions that can be applied to industry with benefits for society in general.
