The IKERLAN technology centre has reached an internationally relevant milestone after successfully passing the audit carried out by the certification body EXIDA on its methodology for the development of AI-based safety systems.
The result was positive, ensuring alignment with the ASPICE MLE compliance criteria, and positioning it as one of the first assessments in Spain and Europe to validate a railway system with functional safety requirements that integrates Machine Learning (ML) techniques.
This achievement, developed within the framework of the European project SAFEXPLAIN, has a research demonstrator character, not a commercial product, but it marks a key precedent: it demonstrates that artificial intelligence can be integrated into safety-critical systems following auditable and recognised methodologies.
It represents a significant milestone for the future certification of AI-based processes, an essential step to accelerate the adoption of these technologies in industrial environments where safety is non-negotiable.
EXIDA is a global authority in certification and consultancy for functional safety and industrial cybersecurity in automation systems, industrial processes, and electronic devices. The positive validation by EXIDA reinforces IKERLAN’s leadership in the field of functional safety and positions the organisation as a reference in applied research for trustworthy and certifiable AI.
