IKERLAN has signed an agreement with the Austrian company TTTech Computertechnik, one of the world’s most prestigious organisations in the field of security and dependability of networked electronic systems. The aim of this agreement is that both organisations should advance together in research into industrial wireless communications, one of the fields in which the Basque centre is keen to further its expertise.

Wireless communications are expected to revolutionise the way in which we currently conceive factories and the products and components produced in them. It comes as no surprise that these communications are an indispensable element in the introduction of advanced manufacturing and the so-called industry 4.0 as they will enable the different elements in the production chains to be interconnected.

These communications need to be reliable and secure despite the fact that they transfer huge quantities of data and that this takes place in hostile environments full of interference. Over the coming two years (a period which could be extended), IKERLAN and TTTech will be working side by side to explore new technological developments that will allow progress to be made in the introduction of communications networks of this type.

IKERLAN’s CEO Marcelino Caballero and the member of the executive board of TTTech Computertechnik Georg Kopetz signed this agreement that anticipates launching a mechanism for researcher exchange between the two organisations and exploring joint ways of participating in the R&D&i projects funded by the European Union.

“Specifically we will be advancing together in the field of what is known as deterministic wireless communication, which is the basis of dependable communication systems and one of the fields in which IKERLAN has proven capacity and a great future potential,” explained Caballero.

“We hope that this agreement with such an important leader in the sphere of robust networked monitoring systems will enable us to advance together in a field of huge interest for us in view of the tremendous opportunities it offers to drive forward the competitiveness of companies,” he said.

Apart from the industrial sphere, industrial wireless communications have a huge potential for application in other sectors such as the automotive, aircraft, energy and railway sectors. IKERLAN is developing technologies for cutting-edge companies in these fields.

About TTTech

TTTech Computertechnik is an Austrian company that emerged as a spin-off of the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien). Right now, it is the European R&D leader in robust networked control systems and is developing state-of-the-art solutions to improve the security and reliability of these systems. These products are applied in sectors such as the automotive, aerospace, energy, railway and industrial sectors.

This company, which has a presence in nine countries and a total of more than 400 employees, likewise conducts significant work in the area of research.

IK4-IKERLAN is a leading centre in technology transfer, and in providing companies with competitive value, owing, among other things, to the expertise of its researchers. It offers comprehensive solutions by combining various technological domains. This is possible owing to its high degree of expertise in three major areas: Electronics, Information and Communication Technologies (EICTs), Energy and Power Electronics, and Advanced Manufacturing. Right now, it has a staff of approximately 280 people.

There will be a researcher exchange, and channels for participating together in European projects will be explored
