- Close to fifty representatives of several reference industrial companies, universities and technological centres of Euskadi met
The IK4-IKERLAN technological centre held a seminar in which the possibilities offered by the silicon carbide (SiC) technology in the transport, energetic or elevation sectors, among others, were discussed. The meeting took place yesterday, November 23rd, in the Orona Ideo facility, in Hernani.
Silicon carbide (SiC) is shaking the power electronics sector, since it offers higher switching speed and higher thermal conductivity, key elements to achieve lighter, more efficient and smaller converters.
The seminar gathered close to fifty representatives from several reference industrial companies, universities and technological centres from Euskadi.
Among the speakers, in addition to the experts from IK4-IKERLAN, were the Project Manager of the Energy Cluster from the Basque country, Marcos Suárez; the Technology Sales Account Manager from Wolfspeed-CREE, Alejandro Esquivel, and the Technology Director of CAF Power & Automation, Txomin Nieva, who talked about the real experiences that took place in their companies, the evolution of these semi-conductors and the future trends of this technology.
Specifically, Nieva focused his presentation in the Roll2Rail project, which CAF Power & Automation has carried out in collaboration with IK4-IKERLAN, and which has recently concluded with the development of an innovative system of electric traction based on the SiC technology for trains.
This development allowed to reduce the size by 30 %, reduce the weight by 20 % and increase the energetic efficiency by 50 % compared to the equipment currently used.
About IK4-IKERLAN
IK4-IKERLAN is a leading centre for technology transfer and for providing competitive value to companies due, among other things, to the expertise of its researchers. It offers comprehensive solutions by combining different fields of technology in three main areas: Electronics, information and communication technology (EICT), Energy and power electronics and Advanced manufacturing. In 2017, AENOR has certified IK4-IKERLAN’s comprehensive management system (UNE-EN ISO 9001:2015 and UNE 166002:2014), which is a acknowledging of the excellence of the centre in the R&D&I area. It currently has a staff of approximately 300 people.
