Power Electronics

shape

Electric power is essential in our society, but to be able to use it we need to control and transform it. Power electronics allows this in an efficient, safe and flexible manner, thanks to the power converters. To design these devices, in this area we have an in-depth domain of electronics and of the final application where they will be applied, in addition to the areas such as control, cooling, electromechanical design and the associated electromagnetic systems.

IK4-Ikerlan conducts research in this area to obtain the highest possible performance in terms of reliability and low cost, together with all the other technical features the different applications require.

Power Electronics

Technologies we employ

Integral design and development of:

  • Electrical machines and drives
  • Electrical machines control strategies
  • Static and dynamic contactless charging systems (Inductive Coupling Power Transfer)
  • Induction heating applications
  • Inductance and transformers
  • Custom design tools

Simulation tools used: Flux 2D/3D, Maxwell, Matlab/Simulink, PLECS, MotorCAD

Development of real-scale prototypes in railway traction, aeronautics, lifting, renewable energies, industrial heating, household appliances applications, among others.

Integral design and development of:

  • Silicon (Si), silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) based power converters for a wide array of topologies (Two-level, NPC, cascade, resonants, etc.).
  • Control algorithms for converters (modulation, control loops...)
  • Gate drivers for semiconductors of Si, SiC and GaN
  • Custom design tools

Simulation tools used: Matlab/Simulink, PLECS

Development of real-scale prototypes in applications of railway traction, aeronautics automotive, lifting, renewable energies, electrical grids...
